“I will love You, O Lord, my strength. 2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”   ps 18:1-2 nkjv

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” Jhn 3:16-17 kjv

What does David understand his words written in Psalms 18:1 to mean?… “I will love You, O LORD, my strength...” What does it mean to love God (Yahweh)?

It is said that David wrote this Psalm in reference to his plight when he was being pursued by his enemies, and because Yahweh had delivered him from the hand of King Saul… who tried several times to kill him. Near the end of Psalms 18, David says this:

“The Lord lives! Blessed be my Rock! Let the God of my salvation be exalted. 47 It is God who avenges me, And subdues the peoples under me; 48 He delivers me from my enemies. You also lift me up above those who rise against me; You have delivered me from the violent man. 49 Therefore I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the Gentiles, And sing praises to Your name.” ps 18:46-49 nkjv

I hope you will understand the way Yahweh defines “love.” John 3:16-17 above defines Yahweh’s expression of His love for us. The world has defrauded the meaning of love and cobbled up its meaning and caused serious damage to the implementation of real true love as Yahweh intended it to be absorbed into the mind and actions of His people… that by the study of His Word and its true teaching, we learn how we ought to live in relationship to a Holy God and to our fellow man. To “love God- Yahweh,” is to seek to learn His ways and to faithfully obey His instructions for living the substance of His Word (Torah).

“When Yeshua was asked, “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment.” mat 22:36-38 nkjv

Yeshua was quoting from the Torah, Deut 6:4-5, which is part of the Shema, Deut 6:4-9… a daily prayer recital that practicing Jewish faithful esteem as one of the greatest pursuits of faith.

I think our decision to “love” Yahweh should be a mirror response to the “love” He afforded us in giving us His only begotten son… Yeshua. He gave everything, with all His heart, soul, mind, and strength… laying down His life for us at Calvary.

I think life is a test. Will we faithfully follow Yeshua’s ways and let His Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, prevail in our “love life,” or will we carelessly allow the distractions of contradictions and worldly pressure and temptations to dilute and corrupt our true love and faithfulness to our Heavenly Father?

Shalom… John
